Lend a Hand (Volunteer Opportunities and Charities I Like)

  1. Distributed Proofreaders

Correct, format, and proofread transcripts of scanned public domain books to be uploaded to Project Gutenberg.

  2. Fallout for Hope

A charity team formed by fans of the Fallout franchise. They usually fundraise for St. Jude’s children’s hospital, and that place saved my nephew’s life so I’m VERY grateful for what these folks do.

  3. Freerice

Answer trivia questions to raise money for the United Nations’ World Food Programme.

  4. Letters Against Depression

Write encouraging letters and/or create small crafts to send to people battling mental illness, or request to receive letters/crafts yourself. (Note: This does take the most setup out of all the things on this list, but since you can do it from home whenever you want with no obligation, I still think it’s simple enough to be here.)

  5. Librivox and its forum

Listen to free public domain audiobooks or help create new audiobook recordings for the site. All you need is a computer, some audio software, maybe a mic, and your voice!

  6. The Lost Media Wiki and The LMW Forums

Explore the stories of lost, partially lost/found, and found media, and start or join searches for lost media that’s important to you.

  7. Smithsonian Transcription Center

Transcribe historical documents for the Smithsonian. (Note: Not gonna lie to you, this one is simple but difficult. Be prepared to decipher old handwriting.)

  8. Trove

Explore items from Australian libraries, universities, museums, galleries, and archives, or become a “Voluntrove” and correct transcripts of scanned newspapers, gazettes, magazines, newsletters, and books.
